The learners that this lesson will be created for students in a 4th grade class.
The Sunshine State Standards this lesson will address are:
1)SC.G.1.2--The student understands the competitive,
interdependent, cyclic nature of living things in the
environment.
2)SC.D.2.2--The student understands the need for protection of the
natural systems on Earth.
3)LA.B.2.2--The student writes to communicate ideas and information
effectively.
4)LA.C.3.2--The student uses speaking strategies effectively.
5)LA.C.1.2--The student uses listening strategies effectively.
6)LA.A.1.2--The student uses the reading process effectively.
7)LA.A.2.2--The student constructs meaning from a wide range of
texts.
*The lesson plan is very interactive, covering a wide range of curricular areas such as science, reading, writing, listening, viewing, and speaking, therefore, the Sunshine State Standards listed above touch on all of those areas.
S--State Your Objectives:
The students, after viewing a video about different biomes, the habitats within them, and the animals that live in them, and after a class discussion lead by the teacher, will individually write a reflection about animals, habitats, and how humans live in habitats and can affect natural habitats with 90% accuracy.
The students, when put into groups and given a computer (and a laptop) for each group, will also be able to research answers to a scavenger hunt about different biomes, animals and their habitats, and create a power point presentation, to be presented to the class, as a group, on one animal and it's habitat that the group has agreed on researching further. The students will do this with 85% accuracy.
The students as a class, with the aid of the teacher, will create a class video about what they have learned about biomes, animals, and habitats, and how humans can help to preserve natural habitats. The video will be shown to other classes in the grade, and the students will conduct a question/answer session with the classes they present to. All of this will be done with 100% accuracy.
→The Bloom's Taxonomy Levels this lesson will include are knowledge, evaluation, comprehension, analysis, and synthesis.
S--Select Media and Materials:
The media and materials needed are:
Youtube Video about biomes, animals, and habitats.
A television or projector screen with the correct hook ups to play a video from a computer
Computers (at least one for each group, but two would be best)
Laptops (one per group)
Microsoft PowerPoint
Windows Movie Maker
The Internet
Pencils and/or Pens
Paper
U--Utilize Media and Materials:
The youtube video will be shown to the students as an introduction to the topic of biomes, animals, and habitats. The students will watch the video, and after a class discussion, lead by the teacher, the students will write a reflection about what they have learned so far about biomes and habitats, and the animals within them. They will also write about how humans have habitats and how humans can have positive and negative effects on biomes and habitats. Basically, the students should write individual reflections about what has been covered so far. They will also have the option to share their reflections with the class, if they so wish.
The students will use the computers (as well as laptops) and the internet to research answers to the scavenger hunt, to research information about the animal they chose as a group, and to create a PowerPoint presentation for the class about what they have learned from their research.
The students, with the aid of the teacher, will also use Windows Movie Maker to create a classroom video about all that they have learned about biomes, animals, habitats, and how humans can help to preserve those habitats. The video will be shown to other classes, and the students will hold a question/answer session with those classes.
R--Require Learner Participation:
As a class, we will have a discussion about biomes, animals, habitats, and how humans can play a role in the preservation of those habitats. The discussion will be in question/answer form, lead by the teacher, who will build questions as the students respond to initial questions posed by the teacher. The students will also be allowed to talk amongst themselves to come up with answers to the questions. The students will then write individual reflections about what they have learned so far and how they feel about this topic. Students can then share their reflections with the class if they so desire.
The students will be working in groups to research the answers to questions from a scavenger hunt and to create a group presentation after conducting research as a group. The students are learning about different biomes, animals within those biomes, and the habitats they live in, as well as how humans can help to preserve those habitats.
Also, as a class, the students will create a classroom video about what they have learned. This video will be shared with other classes in the grade. The students will hold a question/answer session after the video is shown, with the classes they present to.
E--Evaluate and Revise:
Based on the accuracy levels set in the learning objectives, the students will be evaluated on how well they engaged in the class discussion and how clear and thoughtful their reflections are. They will also be evaluated on how accurately they answered the questions to the scavenger hunt, and if they were able to work well in their groups to get the assignment completed. The students will also be evaluated on how clear their presentations are--how well their ideas are organized, how clear they present the information, and how well they worked together to complete the assignment and assign parts to the presentation. The students will also be evaluated on how well they work together, as a class, to create and present the class video. Students must also use good listening and viewing skills when they are listening to the presentations of other groups. The students will be evaluated on their attentiveness and ability to listen to the other groups, without interrupting the other presentations.
